Is It Normal To Have Odema Around The Ankle Joint And Swelling During Recovery Phase From Achilles Tendon Rupture?

hI , I had an Achilles Tendon rupture in August 2013. Non-surgical repair with full cast and foot in Equine position. Cast removed end September 2013. Undergoing physio rehab to strengthen Achilles/ankle.
However, still suffer from a doughnut odema around the ankle joint and some swelling in the lower leg which will disperse overnight. Is this normal in the recovery phase?
Cheers,
Geoff

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi there.

Your symptoms coincide with post traumatic dependent edema.
Yes....these sort of symptoms do occur even for months after injuries to and around the ankle region.
It is mostly due to sluggish blood return from the lower leg in dependant position.
Good part is that it dissappears after rest.

Treatment :
1. Continue with your physio rehab programme which will help in increasing circulation.
2. While standing and walking wear a venous stocking.

I hope my advice has helped.
Good luck
