Is It Harmful To Administer Morphine At A Very Low BP?
My father was given morphine with a blood pressure of 98/40. After 5 minutes of taking the morphine, his blood pressure bottomed out and he was put on life support and heart could never get stabled and he died. The family tried to tell the hospital his pressure was too low. But they administered it anyway. Also, we believe he was allergic to morphine as well. Is there a pressure in which morphine should NOT be administered?
morphine reduces the volume of blood that returns to the heart and causes a drop in blood pressure. There is no clear contraindication though. Caution is needed in old age and in patients with renal or liver problems. Patients with allergic reactions have to be excluded of course.
I don't believe that in a hospital setting a patient could die from opioid induced hypotension... Perhaps his general condition was pretty bad, although I don't have enough information to support that.
I hope you find my comments helpful! You can contact me again, if you'd like any clarification or further information.
Kind Regards!
