Is It Confidential If I Tell The Doctor Whether Or Not I Am Sexually Active?
I am inquiring about doctor-patient priviledge. I am 16 and I am being taken into one of your offices to be prescribed birth control (for the first time). Is it confidential if I tell the doctor whether or not I am sexually active? I would prefer it my parents don't know (I am going on B.C. also because of my skin) and I want to ensure they will not find out. Also, does anything different happen during the appointment if I AM in fact sexually active? Does the procedure change or no?
First, anything you say during the visit is considered confidential and it would be a breach of patient-doctor confidentiality to discuss any conversation with a parent. That being said, you are a minor, so this might not always apply. You need to ask the doctor "will you keep this conversation confidential? Also, how do you handle confidentiality given that I am a minor?" What it changes during the visit is that you would be offered STD screening.
I hope that this helps and good luck! Dr. Tim
