Is Intercourse With An HPV Infected Person Harmful?

A man I just started dating says that he has HPV. Does that mean he is a carrier and it stays in his system? One web statement that people contract it and then it can go away on its own. He says A blood test revealed this. It also says using condoms is not completely safe. We are both 72. What are the risks for me and precautions to take in having sex with him?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. certain important things which you need to remember are:

i. Sexually active men will get HPV at some time in their life. [and because he is already positive thus having unprotected sex [anal sex], will make you susceptible to the infection].

ii. Although most HPV infections go away on their own, but HPV in men cause genital warts or even cancer, so get yourself vaccinated.

PS. although mostly [in 90% cases] the immune system of a person clears the HPV in two years but may remain dormant in the body and reappear again if there is weakened immunity of the patient [like the occurrence of diabetes, tuberculosis, thyroid problem, recurrent cold]

2. Avoid sharing your personal items and keep separate shaving blades for face, underarm, and pubic hairs.
. Do not touch them as this may spread the infection to surrounding areas.
. practice safe sex: use condoms the correct way every time you have sex,
which can lower your chances of getting all STIs (sexually transmitted disease), [because HPV can infect areas not covered by the condom, so this is the reason]

3. The HPV does not go away and may remain present in the cervical cells for years as such regular screening/follow up is recommended [since at present] there is no known test for men.

4. You may consult a healthcare provider if you see anything new or unusual [growth/lump/warts] on your or his private parts and it is important that you and your sex partner discuss their sexual health and risks for all STIs with each other.

5. For such types of infections, Rasayana drugs (Rejuvenation/ Immunomodulators) should be taken i.e. which corrects the dysfunction of tissues without disturbing the functions of normal tissues, also Rasayana drugs potentiate humoral antibodies, by increasing serum Immunoglobulins such as IgA,IgG and IgM.
