Is Increased Dosage Of Metformin Safe For Elevated Fasting Sugar Levels?
I am a male 67 with type 2 diabetes, over the past month or so my fasting results have risen from 6.5-7-2 to 7.9-8.3. I was taking 1 500mg Metformin, however when I noticed the levels rising I added another 500mg after my evening meal. What should I do? As my levels have been very stable for over 6 years. Michael

General & Family Physician, Dr. Pinak De's Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
Maximum dose of metformin is 2500mg/day provided the creatinine clearance is normal. So if your kidney function is normal it can be taken and no congestive heart failure or any recent/near future radiological contrast study.
Hope this helped. Do let us know
