Is Increased BP With High Numbers In Lipid Test Of A Teenager A Cause For Concern?
My 16 year old son went in for a sports physical yesterday. His BP was initially 156/97. We got a reading of 133/92 later in the day but doc was still concerned. She ordered blood work and most came out fine but creatinine was .97, ALT was 57, albumin was 5.4 and his lipid panel had a couple of high numbers as well. He is a very active kid who is about 20 pounds overweight according to bmi. Any ideas?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. What your son is suffering is from 'adolescent obesity' as you are suggesting that he is 20 pounds overweight, which is not a good sign at all. That is the reason why his lipid levels are altered with increase in blood pressure as well. His readings of blood pressure is definitely a matter of concern. His ALT levels of 57 U/L suggests that there is some amount of liver dysfunction as well, probably due to altered lipid profile. However, his creatinine level of 0.97mg/dl is normal and tells his kidneys are alright. Although you say he is very active, you need to take appropriate measures to evaluate endocrine cause for his obesity and strictly control through diet and exercise so that his physiology comes back to normal. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
