Is Hemoglobin Value Of 63 A Cause For Concern?

Hi, My name is Anup Jubbal age 80 years. My Hemoglobin is 63. My doctor told me that I am anemic. He/she recommended blood transfusion. Please let me know if my hemoglobin stays at 63, what are the risks involved and how do I build my hemoglobin. All other suggestion, which you propose. Urgent reply requested. Anup S. Jubbal

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Hemoglobin level what you have mentioned should be 6.3 g%.
Hemoglobin % less than 10 should be considered as anaemia and needs to be treated by means of blood transfusion. 1 unit of blood transfused will increase hemoglobin by 1 g%. Hence you require 2 units of blood.
Once your hemoglobin level is more than 8 g%, you can further increase by intake of iron capsules orally and iron transfusions by intravenous route.
Also you need to take iron rich foods like green leafy vegetables and jaggery through diet.
You will need to get evaluated for the cause if anaemia by consulting a Physician, for further management.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
