Is Brown Sugar Good For Health?

Is it the same as the regular sugar?
My name is sue. I love to make cake for my family but it is important for me to know about the effect of the brown sugar to our health. Is it the same as the regular sugar? Is it the same calories? How bad it is for the diabetes because my mother in law has it very bad and I am worried about my kids and my husband. Will u please answer me so I know? Thank u.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Sue,

Regular sugar is derived from beetroot; and is often processed to get it as white table sugar.

Brown sugar is usually derived from sugarcane naturally, without being processed.

Brown sugar won't give spikes in blood sugar and is healthy. So, I encourage to use it more than white table sugar. However, be careful to choose the right brown sugar as industry is coloring beetroot sugar to make it brown sugar.

All the best!
Dr.Albana
