Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is An Abrupt Withdrawal Of Ecosprin A Cause For Concern?
I have been taking Ecospirin 150mg for the past 17 months as I had a stroke. I am due for dental surgery to remove a hyper plastic growth on my gums in 3 days. I have stopped Ecospirin 150 mg for the past 3 days. Is it dangerous? Is there any other tablet I can take until my surgery is over ?
I understand your concern. Ecosprin (low dose aspirin) is a pain killer which also prevents blood clots from forming. It works by decreasing the ability of the blood to clot, hence in case of dental work, it carries the risk of extensive bleeding. On the other hand, discontinuation of aspirin is associated with increased risk of thrombosis (clotting), especially within the first month from the discontinuation. This is a double whammy and there is no clear stance between physicians on this matter. The general approach is that, prior to surgical procedures, patients with low risk for thrombosis are advised to discontinue the aspirin prior to the procedure. Whereas, patients with high risk for thrombosis are advised against discontinuation, as in this case the risks would outweigh the benefits. It is up to your doctor to determine the level of risk in your case and to make the final decision on whether to get you off Ecospirin or not.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
