Is A Episode Of Chest Fluttering, Fainting And Sweating A Concern?

I had an episode about 2-3 weeks ago, and I m not sure if it is worth following up on. I felt fluttering in my chest, felt faint and sweaty. No shortness of breath or chest pain. The entire episode lasted only about 15-20 seconds, but concerned me. I have felt palpitations before, but never with accompanying symptoms. This had not happened before, and has not happened since. I assumed it was most likely due to caffeine intake, although I had not used more than usual that day. I am an otherwise healthy 40 year old woman.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems to be due to cardiac syncope or arrhythmia so a baseline EKG is recommended to look for any abnormal heart rhythm. Thyroid profile, serum electrolytes and sugar levels should also be done.

If unremarkable 24-hour holter monitoring is a must. En echocardiogram to rule out any structural heart issue should be done.

This episode should not be taken lightly and should be worked up as a must to avoiding any life-threatening consequences in the future. Avoid too much caffeine and tea.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
