Is A Delayed Period, Cramping And Spotting Normal After Unprotected Intercourse?

Hi, I took Next choice one dose during my last period August 1st, just incase due to unprotected sex and withdrawal method. My period is about 4 days late based on the last one. I had cramping the past four days and a little today again but no blood. Is it normal to be a little delayed?

Hello,

You are 4 days due to your menstrual period. You have a little cramping and spotting. You had unprotected sex. Next Choice is a one dose emergency contraceptive (EC) pill that can lower your chance of getting pregnant if it's taken within 72 hours (three days) of unprotected sex or birth control failure.

If taken wrongly, this medicine will not work. Since you are 4 days due, wait for a couple of days. If you miss your periods you should get clinically examined by a gynecologist. It is not normal, you can be pregnant. Get per vaginal check up done to detect bulky uterus. Get a urine test for pregnancy done.

Your treating doctor can tell you to do a USG (Uterus and fallopian) tube to detect ectopic pregnancy and if pregnant to detect the gestational age of the fetus. Other medical conditions that may cause delay in periods are stressful lifestyle, anemia, poor general health condition, PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, etc. You will be accordingly managed if pregnant or not pregnant.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
