Hi, my wife was detected with a very highTSH levels. The TSH level was 172 in the last test compared to a normal of 4.6. We have been consulting Dr.Madhubhashini (General Physician) in Global Hospital Chennai. She prescribed Thyroxin 100 mg daily and also asked for another test for T3, T4 count and antibodies. My wife is still having some symptoms after 3 days of medication. Should I take a second opinion and meet an endocrinologist ?
Hello dear Understand your concern High TSH level suggests low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). For better management you should consult the endocrinologist. Remember TSH is very high and require long term treatment. It will not goes off in 3 days. You should take thyroxin 100 mg daily. But you should require regular follow up every 1-2 months to regularize the thyroid hormone and proper dose of thyroixine. Along with TSH: T4, T3 or free T4 and free T3 should be done to identifies the cause of hypothyroidism. Anti TPO antibody also helpful in identify the autoimmune etiology. So consult the endocrinologist for proper management of case in future. Hope this may help you
