Is Prednisone effective for shingles?

I have Sarcoidosis for about 33 years. I just started a bout off shingles ( my third time)on my right breast under my arm and back on the right side. I take CBD oil for pain which helps.(legal in Canada) I am taking 30mg of prednisone which my Specialist prescribed me some time ago for my lungs. The pain can be very sharp at times and sometimes it itches. I put colloidal silver on it to help for the itch. Would the prednisone help with the shingles.?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Shingles is usually treated with orally administered acyclovir.
The addition of an orally administered corticosteroid can provide modest benefits in reducing the itching and inflammation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I was diagnosed with Shingles on july 8th. I am taking prednisone and and anti viral drug. The blisters have appeared and I understand they are now contagious. I assume that only if the blister is oozing? Also, someone told me that swimming in a pool that is treated with chlorine helped them? I am at a loss right now.

I am aFNP and saw my neighbor who has shingles from her left lateral lower thoracic area to her hip. She has been on Prednisone for two months. I asked her to contact her primary care MD and/ or go to urgent care for treatment. Is there anything else I need to ask her to do?

I take L-Lysine for cold sores and rarely have them, but when I do get one, I run to the Lysine. Recently I decided to take 500 mg of the L-Lysine/day in the hopes that it will keep me from ever having Shingles. Experimenting on myself, you might say. I cannot afford the shot for Shingles and I don t like taking that kind of stuff anyway. I don t take flu shots for the same reasons, I don t trust their content. I just work on keeping myself healthy. I am 68 yrs old. Thank you for any ideas or advice or experience that you might have had or heard of on this subject. Mary
