Is Metoprolol Effective In The Treatment Of Supraventricular Tachycardia?

I was taking Corgard 20mg ( nadolol) Tablets once daily for the last 8 years for SVT. BP was controlled. Heart palpitations were controlled. Recently only once every 2 or 3 or 4 months I started getting palpitation for few minutes. Today other Cardiologist changed to metoprolol ER 25 mg daily. I do not see here in this article, if it is used for SVT. Only for BP. Please clarify this.

Hello,

I understand you have a question about metoprolol for SVT.

Metoprolol, like Nadolol, are both beta-blocker medications, which work on the heart to decrease the heart rate and slow the transmission of electrical current through the heart, which helps control abnormal heart rhythms like SVT.

Since they both work the same way, metoprolol would be appropriate for your condition. I'm not sure why exactly it is not listed for SVT in the article you mentioned, but sometimes medications are used "off-label".

Which means the drug company did not specifically request approval from the FDA for a certain disease (in this case, for SVT), but the medication can be used, and often is used, for that condition.

It is normal practice for doctors to use medications "off-label" like this, and sometimes the best medication available is "off-label".

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
