Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it safe to take Melatonin at night before I go to bed instead of my anxiety medication? I m not nervous before I go to sleep. I had rather take something natural. I don t sleep good at night and don t want to take something that is addictive. What is the lowest of Melatonin to take? I have a bottle of Melatonin 1 mg. Is that safe? I m sorry. I didn t know it cost to get an answer. I live on disability and I don t have the money to pay. I am sorry for asking. Thank you.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Melatonin is used for treatment of insomnia. It induces sleep. Its lowest effective dose is 3 mg at bed time. But it is not effective in treatment of anxiety. It can be taken along with anti-anxiety medicine such as alprazolam.
Advice:
1. Melatonin 3 mg daily at bed time per oral 2. Avoid tea and coffee in evening and night 3. Avoid alcohol and smoking especially in night 4. Exercising for at least 30 minutes per day can improve your sleep
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nishikant Verma
