Is Lynch Syndrome Hereditary?

My wife is 72 years old. Her sister who is 68 years old has cancer and possibly has Lynch Syndrome. Her sister is terminal and does not want any treatment and does not want to have any testing to determine if she has Lynch Syndrome. Should my wife get tested for Lynch Syndrome and should our two daughters get tested? Our daughters are ages 47yrs and 46yrs. My wife and her sister have 6 other brothers and sisters. Are they very likely to have Lynch Syndrome? And are my two daughters likely to get Lynch Syndrome? Thank you for your assistance. My wife will be discussing this with her doctor soon. My email address is: YYYY@YYYY .

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Lynch syndrome is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and yes it is hereditary and screening should be done for all family members to exclude risk of colorectal cancer [CEA[carcinoembryonic antigen], screening test can be done]

PS. Since women have an increased risk of developing endometrial/ovarian cancer thus female members must be screened

2. Seek an opinion of Genetic Counsellor for tumor marking test because lynch syndrome does not skip generations and is hereditary, so there is a 50% chance that a person will pass on the mutation to each of his or her children.
