General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is the rate at which red blood cells sediment in a time of one hour. It is a common hematology test, but is a non-specific measure of inflammation occuring in the body.

Increase in ESR is seen in inflammation, pregnancy, anaemia, autoimmune disorders (such as rheumatoid arthritis), infections, few kidney diseases and certain types of cancers namely lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

He should be investigated further by means of clinical examination and relevant investigations to know what could be the underlying cause.

Accordingly, he can be treated, which would bring the levels within normal limits.

Kindly consult Physician for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
