Is Ampicillin & Dicloxacillin Safe During Pregnancy?

I am 28 years old. I am 7 months pregnant. I cut my ring finger near the nail and I was treated for the injury. But some infection has developed in the wounded area. I have been prescribed to take “Ampicillin & Dicloxacillin Capsule” 3 times a day for 3 days. Is it advisable to take it?

Hi,
Ampicillin and Dicloxacillin have been assigned to category B in pregnancy. This means there are no studies to prove harmful side effects in humans during pregnancy. The use of the drug is suggested when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. There have been no observed instances of birth defects or other abnormalities while these drugs have been used. Since these are considered the safest drugs in pregnancy, and also since you need proper treatment to heal your injury, please go ahead as per your doctor's instructions. Hope this helps.
