Can Cipro Cause Severe Joint Pain And Difficulty Walking?
Question: Something is different with my body - I'm wondering if it could be related to the Cipro Antibiotic I took in April? I was on it for five days and then the doctor switched me to Ampicillin, but the day after that I had my left hip joint that went out and was terribly painful on any movement, and felt like my hip joint was giving out or slipping out of the socket - my leg buckled and it made me groan even trying to be quiet every time. It went on bad for about a month, and then gradually got better - it only happens about once a day now and isn't too bad. But about the time it was resolving itself, I got a searing pain in my right flank which also nearly made it impossible to walk or bend and eventually even couldn't sleep for the pain. But now, weeks later, it's better too. I go in for a laprascope gallbladder removal on Sept 11th which my own and "your" doctors believe is necessary, but I'm afraid of what's going to go bad with my muscles or joints next? I guess I should just relax and wait and see? Is it common for extreme pain and joint problems to move around after Cipro? Or is it just coincidental timing?

Well, I don't think this is related to Cipro since this is not a described side effect. This is more likely to be muscular or neurogenic pain especially if this is related to movements. Flank pain may be associated with kidneys stone or infection but in that case pain would be constant or accompanied by blood in urine. if pain occur on different joints then it may be migratory arthritis and you should see rheimatologost in this case. however,hip and flank pain is typical sign of hip arthrosis and it would be good to do X-rays or MRI scan of the hip to evaluate this.
Regarding the gallbladder surgery,there is no need to delay this or be concerned about this since it should not affect muscular pain. you can highlight to surgeon your concerns about Cipro,since antibiotics may be used after surgery. but as I said,i doubt that cipro has anything to do with this. it would be good to check rheumatoid factor,anti nuclear antibodies and autoimmune testing after surgery. wish you good health.
