Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 70 years old and have slight bulging disc in my lower back. I encounter pain in both legs upper part. To manage pain I use Tylenol. I am presently on Diovan 80mg and low dose aspirin 81mg. it s been suggested I use Aleve. I hesitant doing so as it interacts with Aspirin. Please help
Aleve contains naproxen which belongs to the group of medications known as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Before using Aleve, tell your doctor if you use antihypertensive such as Diovan like valsartan. The combination may cause your blood pressure increase. You may need an adjustment in the dose or get your blood pressure checked more often. After stop taking Aleve, your blood pressure may decrease.
Use of Aleve along with aspirin may reduce the effectiveness of aspirin if you are taking it to prevent heart attacks or strokes. In addition, combining these medications may increase your risk of developing gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. So, Aleve should be taken with aspirin only for short period and under the supervision of your doctor. If any side effect develops, your doctor should be informed promptly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
