Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was on 50mg trazodone 10 days for insomnia. Worst drug ever. I don't take anything else other than levoxyl and estroven. I stopped taking three nights ago. The withdrawal is horrible. Don't suffer from depression at all until now going through this. Also heart palpitations, disorientation, depersonalization, headache and of course absolutely no sleep. Any idea how long the withdrawal will cease given the short amount of time I took it?
Hi, Less commonly trazodone does cause discontinuation symptoms that you report of. It could have been avoided if you had stopped it by consulting your psychiatrist and gradually withdrawn it instead of stopping abruptly. Now, to control your symptoms, the drug has to be reintroduced and gradually tapered. Usually when symptoms are acute, relief is commonly achieved within 24 hours by restarting the drug at the same dose you discontinued it at. A slow tapering can then be done over few weeks. If you continue to have difficulty, even with this, then using another agent to help taper it with, that has a longer half-life may prevent the symptoms during the taper. Consulting your psychiatrist for this would be the best option. Hope this helps, Dr Anjana rao.
