How To Treat Severe Swelling And Redness Of Left Ear Lobe?

About three days ago I noticed sever swelling of my left ear lobe. I treated it with Neosporin and the like and took some Benadrill with no relief. The next day the lobe was about 5 - 10 times the size of my other lobe and I felt tenderness and swelling behind my ear, at the bottom of my head and around to my jaw. I then treated the area with heat and more topical ointments. I also began taking Amoxacilim that I had left over from and earlier ailment. Now three days into this, I woke up today to find the rash moving onto my jaw area and in serious pain. The lobe is still swollen and red and very itchy. As an aside, I was stung by many mosquito s about seven days ago, so concerned about West Nile. Your thoughts are welcome. Janine

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your query.
In my opinion, you might be having severe infection of your external ear.
More so a streptococcal or staphylococcus infection. Rash us also associated with this.
If I were your treating doctor, I would have advised admission of the patient and intravenous penicillin antibiotics, anti inflammatory medicines like paracetamol + diclofenac combination drugs twice daily.
Incision and drainage of pus If present.
Oral amox antibiotics are good, but I feel the infection is severe so u may need intravenous antibiotics .
Continue with the drugs you are taking and if symptoms persists for more than 3 days, then I would suggest you to consult with the doctor and get evaluated. Hope my answers have helped you. Thanks.
