How To Treat Pus Inside The Arm?

Hi Doctor, I had puss inside my right arm below elbow 2 years back. After certain checks, he suggested to remove the puss through surgery. Now after 2 years, I am again having swelling on my arm slightly above my elbow and it is paining. My questions 1) Is this TB 2) How can I cure this, is it through another surgery or through medicines? Pl help Doctor.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The pain and swelling above elbow with history of previous surgery of pus removal is not normal consideration. The most common possibility sounds to be osteomyelitis condition, which is infection of the bone (usually medullary cavity) secondary to hematogenous spread or from focal lesion of previously infected bone site.

The inflammation could be bacterial lesion or tuberculosis likely. In my clinic, I do recommend:
- Lab tests with complete blood counts and ESR
- X-ray of the elbow AL and oblique view
- MRI of the elbow depending upon the x-ray report
- FNAC report of the possible pus site

Management guidelines will be at a glance:
- Control of blood sugar
- Surgical debridement as per the evaluation
- Culture sensitive antibiotics (Intravenous or oral)
- Nutritional support to boost immunity
- Avoidance of steroids or other medications which can delay recovery
- Regular follow up with primary care or physician is of paramount importance

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
