How To Treat Injury Mediated Hit On Lower Right Leg With A Small Bump And Throbbing?

I was catching for my pitcher (softball) during practice. I do not catch in games but help out in practice when needed. Anyway, I got hit in the lower right leg (inside) just above the ankle. At first it just throbbed and I kept playing on it. When I got home (40 minutes later) I realized it had formed a bump the size of the softball itself and an hour later it had reduced to half the size. Right now I do not have a bruise, but being 4 hours later it still throbs. What could it be? Could I have fractured it? Will a bruise eventually appear?

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Fracture is possible. It all depends how strong was the injury. Bruise or bump for sure indicates soft tissues trauma. Bones fracture can be rule out by an X-ray.
If there is a pain in this area when walking or using it, your body tells you that you should avoid moves causing pain and give some time for healing. If the pain is strong enough that you are unable to walk, bone fracture is more possible and the leg should be immobilized for some time.
Unfortunately there is no answer if there is a fracture or not. This can be told only after an X-ray. So if you find the trauma were strong enough to cause a fracture please consult your doctor and have an X-ray.
Bruise will disappear, it is just a matter of time (few days, maybe a week). You may put something cold on it for a while. Try to put the leg little bit higher when lying down (on the pillow).

Hope this will help.
Regards.
