How To Treat Bleeding Caused Due To A Injury On Hand?

I WAS WORKING ON AN OLDER WOODEN BENCH. IT HAD A RUSTY NAIL IN IT. WHEN I REMOVED THE NAIL FROM THE BENCH, IT SCRATCHED THE SURFACE ON THE BACK OF MY HAND. IT DID NOT HIT A VEIN, AND ONLY BLED A SMALL DROP OF BLOOD. I WASHED IT AND DOUSED IT WITH ALCOHAL. WHAT ELSSE SHOULD I DO?

Hi,

If the wound is still bleeding, you should apply gentle pressure to it with a clean cloth or bandage for at least 10 minutes to help stop the bleeding. Once the bleeding has stopped, clean the wound with soap and water, then apply an antibiotic ointment and cover it with a sterile bandage to prevent infection.

If the wound is deep, or if you are unable to stop the bleeding after applying pressure, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. In addition, if you have not had a tetanus shot in the past 10 years, you may need to get one to prevent tetanus infection. If the wound becomes red, swollen, or begins to drain pus, or if you develop a fever, these may be signs of infection and you should see a doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
