If the wound is still bleeding, you should apply gentle pressure to it with a clean cloth or bandage for at least 10 minutes to help stop the bleeding. Once the bleeding has stopped, clean the wound with soap and water, then apply an antibiotic ointment and cover it with a sterile bandage to prevent infection.
If the wound is deep, or if you are unable to stop the bleeding after applying pressure, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. In addition, if you have not had a
tetanus shot in the past 10 years, you may need to get one to prevent tetanus infection. If the wound becomes red, swollen, or begins to drain pus, or if you develop a
fever, these may be signs of infection and you should see a doctor.
