Hello doctor,

I want to ask you question regarding my brother.. actually he is highly depressed just because after 3 years of marriage he is not having a baby. And the reason is - that he is not having sexual contact with his wife from last 1 year just because he is not having any sexual feeling. And due to this he is highly depressed and having negative complex in himself that he is not capable. He is higly demotivated by his life.

Kindly suggest me solution and help him to get out from this problem.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. The relation of reduced libido and depressive symptoms is bidirectional. An individual with existing depression may develop reduced libido and poor erection. Similarly an individual with poor erection and persistently low sexual desire may develop depressive symptoms in later life. So to improve the symptoms depression and erectile dysfunction should be dealt simultaneously.

I'd advise his to visit a psychiatrist for help and evaluation. He should not feel hesitated to visit a psychiatrist because with proper medicines his symptoms would decrease. He has poor desire of sexual intercourse so in such case medicines like PDE-5 inhibitors as Sildenafil or Tadalafil can be used. These medicines are advised to be taken about half to one hour before intercourse and results in strong erections. This will improve his libido also. For her depressive symptoms like lack of motivation, negative complex etc medicines like Bupropion, Mirtazapine, Trazodone etc can help. These medicines will help to reduce his symptoms of depression and will help in strong erections also. Please ask him to consult a psychiatrist for help.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
