How To Handle Aggressive Behavior In A Alzheimer S Patient?
Miy cousin has had alzheimers for about 5 years. Now in full care in unit but because of extra care she was put on hospice. Care is not as close as has been and she is now pulling her hair . What can be done to help this situation . She doesn t react that it hurts and hasn t pulled hair out yet. Appreciate your comments.
Based on the history you have shared, irritability in such patients with neurodegenerative disorders, can be controlled by decreasing brain tonics like mimentin or ginkobiloba if prescribed before and during acute spells of irritability, antipsychotics like haloperidol can be given intramuscularly to control the agitation in such patients.
Sedative like benzodiazepine alone is usually not recommended without adding antipsychotics. Other causes like central nervous system infections should be ruled out with a related neurological consultation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
