How To Get Colon Checked When Suffering From Down S Syndrome?
Hello. Thanks for taking my question/concerm. I have a 64 year old sister who is severe profound Down s Syndrome. She cannot tolerate any type of medical invasive procedure. She has never had a colonoscopy, but has problems with chronic constipation, and a recent GI bleed (doing ok now). Her normal is to have a BM (big and clay-like) once a week. She has had this issue for most of her life. Is there any other way to have her colon checked aside from the process of drinking Golightly? She will never do that willingly.
Once a week bowel movement is quite less. Also in view of the GI bleed (if it was not due to any external cause like anal fissure), you are right in getting a colonoscopy done.
Since colonoscopy requires a high pain and tolerance threshold which many people donot have, getting it done under sedation or a short general anaesthesia.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Dr Geeta
