Hi,

You are in a period of Lactational amenorrhea, also called as postpartal amenorrhoea. It is the condition in which the normal ovulatory cycle and menstruation is not seen in the post natal mother who are actively breastfeeding their child. First menses after delivery is may be lochia or due to oestrogen withdrawal. If the bleeding persists, visit your gynecologist for further evaluation.

Lochia is vaginal discharge after delivery started as heavy bleeding with red clots, overtime into brown clots and finally into clear discharge. On an average, it may lasted for about 24 to 36 days. Average time for first period after delivery is 45 days to 90 days which may vary with individuals.

Lactational amenorrhea is due to hormonal suppression of ovulation due to inadequate surge in the Luteinizing hormone which helps in growth and development of ovarian follicle in each ovarian cycle. Decreased Gonadotrophin releasing hormone and increased prolactin levels decreases the Luteinizing hormone from the pituitary. Blood estrogen levels are also less in delivered mother which inturn affects the endometrial growth during the normal menstrual cycle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
