Hello, I really understand your concern. Blood glucose protocol can not be set permanently for any exercise or patient as it varies patient to patient and also depends upon the pre exercise blood glucose level. However general guidelines can be followed. Here are certain points which you can follow
1. Make sure the coach and the teammates know that he has diabetes. Explain to the coach how to respond if there's a problem related to your child's condition.
2. Your son should wear a medical identification bracelet that alerts others to your child's diabetes, should an emergency occur. Your child should wear this bracelet at all times, not just during exercise and physical activity.
3. Pack a bag of supplies and keep it close by. Include snacks in case of hypoglycemia as well as snacks to prevent hypoglycemia including: Glucose tablets, candy, juice boxes, bottle of water, glucometer and supplies
4.He should check his blood glucose before and after exercising. Remember, the effects of exercise on blood glucose can last for up to 24 hours.
5. A short break should be taken to check blood glucose and eat a snack as football game may prolong than an hour, possibly in half time.
6. As you asked guidance in particular with BG levels, following can be observed

If BG 80-140 mg Ingest 1-2 G/kg of carbohydrates before activity
If 140-250mg ingest 15-30 g carbohydrate after activity
If > 250 mg begin activity with no replacement
and if BG is 250 or above Postpone sports until ketones return to normal
with Ketonuria Take fluids
Be sure to check blood sugar levels more frequently after the activity and overnight to assess if insulin doses need to be adjusted.
And most important of all, Consult your pediatrician regarding all this.
Hope you are satisfied with the discussion.
Regards
