hi, i am a 51 yr old african american male who has been working hard for several years to keep my blood pressure under control through healthier eating habits and exercise. my exercising is not as consistant as it should be however, my numbers have changed from 140/89 over the past few years to 117/71. as of today 1/5/12. I just purchaced a new bood preasured monitor and it still read around the same. I gess i just wanted to share the good news that even if it is hereditary and regardless of other family members suffering almost grave illnesses because of stuborness, with much self discipline and listening to my doctor this is my little success story. thank you for taking the time to read this. sincerely, James

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,
Treatment will depend on lifestyle changes (exercises, reduced salt in take, reduced alcohol and stopping smoking and compliance to treatment prescribed) and drugs. Some persons react differently to others. Monitoring remains the key to adjust dosage and change drugs to avoid side effects. A good relationship with your primary care physician. Kind regards
