How To Avoid Foods That Cause Child Cold?

My two year old son has had cold symptoms for almost a year. We took him to an ENT specialist who insisted he put grommets in both ears and remove his adnoids. After the surgery the next day he said that his ears were extremely blocked with pus etc and after two weeks we saw a hearing specialist who said that he seemed to be okay but the machine consistently gave a negative reading on one ear - so had to go straight back to the ENT who said not to worry about it, there is nothing wrong with his hearing etc. His cold like symptoms did start to clear over the next month or so for about three months and then he has been hit again with another dose of symptoms. One of the grommets in his ear has almost come out around the same time he started the symptoms again. We thought that this may have been the problem but our local chemist took one look at him and said he had allergies to something, he said it could be a number of things. He is rather fair skinned and his red/purple rings under his eyes are also starting to look a little scaley. He is starting to rub his eye a little but nothing out of the norm. He is a terrible sleeper since 5 months old and has slept through the night less than a dozen times since. He drinks plenty of fluids and eats like a champion and I would like to know how to isolate foods that may be affecting him. I am extremely exhausted as I am the only one that attends to him during his sleeplessness and I think I myself have developed some sort of sleep apnia. I would really hope that I can find some sort of quick answer to a very long on going issue.

Hello,

I have a few questions, please:

-what are his cold symptoms (a cough, runny nose, fever)?

-did the ENT doctor prescribe an antibiotic for his ear infections?

-placement of the grommets seems to have relieved his cold symptoms, did you take your son back to ENT doctor when one of the grommets began to come out of his eardrum?

Is there a family history of allergic conditions? E.g. asthma, eczema, or hay fever? Children with eye allergies have red eyes and are constantly rubbing their eyes.

The normal amount of sleep for a healthy toddler is 12-13 hours a night plus one nap(which is included in the 12-13 hours).

To manage his night wakings he ought to have a set sleep schedule and bedtime routine. A consistent nightly bedtime will enable him to fall asleep more easily.

A consistent bedtime routine (20-45 minutes) and includes 3-4 soothing activities (bath, pyjamas, story reading). Continue to allow him to nap. Let him have a transitional object(blanket, doll, stuffed animal).

Do not respond immediately to his movements or sounds. Give him a chance to return to sleep independently.

Parental sleep disruptions, family tension often result from nighttime sleep disturbances.

Behavioural interventions (e.g. counselling) result in fewer sleep problems for the child, but also help alleviate parental stress, improve parental stress and management of daytime behaviours.

He should continue to eat a regular, wholesome diet. There is no evidence that eliminating food s from his diet will relieve his cold symptoms and it could cause a dietary deficiency.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
