How Should Irregular Periods With Spotting Be Treated?

Hi there, something has been bothering me for a while now. I have irregular periods but for the past 4 months now, I would have a day of brown discharge only when I wipe, followed by bright red blood only when I wipe for another day or two followed by a day of heavy bleeding and then another day of very light flow to brown discharge for two days. Why is my period so messed up? I get excited every month hoping its implantation bleeding as I want a baby so much.

Hello,

You are planning for a baby. Presently, you are having irregular periods with messed up brown and heavy discharge. Irregular periods commonly occur due to stress, anemia, hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, PID, PCOS, etc. You are suggested to take a healthy home made nutritious diet, rich in proteins and minerals. If obese, lose weight, maintain healthy weight. Do regular walking and exercises but do not over-exhaust yourself. Stay away from any kind of emotional or physical stress.

Get clinically examined by a gynecologist who is also an infertility treatment expert. Get routine tests and imaging tests if required done. You will be accordingly treated. You and your partners should undergo all tests and investigations that require to be studied so that treatment may be started so that you can conceive. Stay away from addictions if any. Avoid taking fast food and food or drink that may affect conception.

Do not smoke, avoid alcohol, limit caffeine, do not take soy food, Chinese salt, etc. When implantation bleeding occurs, you will also experience other early sign of pregnancy like nausea, vomiting, high basal body temperature, changes in cervical mucus, breast tenderness, fatigue, frequent urination, etc. When you miss your periods get pregnancy test done to confirm it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
