How Should Termipil Kit Be Used?

Hi, my friend has got termipil kit and taken mifepristone 200mg followed by one misoprostol pill after 24 hrs, then again one misoprostol after 12 hr, then 1 day gap followed by two misoprostol a day with 12 hr gap. Is it the safe way to take it ? Can you suggest anything to be taken care during this medication ? I am concerned about side effects and confirmation of pregnancy.

Hi!

First of all the abortion pills should not be taken without consulting a gynecologist because of the high risk of severe bleeding, incomplete abortion, cramps or infection if you make an attempt to terminate the pregnancy at home.

Secondly, the duration & location of pregnancy should be confirmed by an ultrasound scan. Pregnancy should be less than 7 weeks & the location of gestational sac (pregnancy) should be in the uterus (womb).

It can be dangerous if you take the this kit to abort in case of ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in the tube).

Since your friend has already taken a Mifepristone tablet, and after 24 hrs the 4 tablets of Misoprostol, with these medications abortion can occur.

Immediately after taking those pills, you will get vaginal bleeding and strong abdominal cramp till fleshy mass or clots are expelled out. Generally, more than three-quarters of women abort within the first 24 hours.

Bleeding may continue for 1-2 weeks to resolve the abortion completely.

A follow up examination is required after 1 week to check for retained bits or placental tissue. One pelvic ultrasound (post abortion) is quite helpful for confirmation.

In failed medical abortion (5% cases), surgical procedure (D & C) is required to evacuate uterine cavity completely. In such case, gynecologist can help you.

Hope to have answered your query.
