Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a nurse and about to start Clindamycin tomorrow. How many days is the usual course of treatment? Being treated for an abscessed tooth. Took it about 30years ago for similar problem and it worked well. I do have reflux so am concern d about that.
For oral infections, as long as an abscess has been properly drained, clindamycin is usually given for 7 to 14 days. An example of a regimen would be 450 mg 3 times a day.
Another antibiotic option would be Augmentin, but usually if there is a penicillin allergy, clindamycin is given.
Clindamycin does not usually cause any problems with gastroesophageal reflux or heartburn, so I would not expect it to make that worse.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
