How Long Does Diphenhydramine Remain In The System?

I once had a false positive on my drug screen from taking Diphenhydramine/Benadryl/Sominex. It showed up as methadone and initially, I had no idea why I tested positive. We figured it out by process of elimination and what had changed with my meds. I had started taking Sominex instead of Ambien. Thankfully, the confirmation test they send out, cleared things up but I want to avoid anything like that in the future. I have MS and several ruptured discs and have been in pain mgmt for years and have never failed a drug screen until this. I take any and all med exactly as prescribed so that false positive incident scared me to death. I was fearful that a lab error was going to ruin my life and the trust with my dr. Anyway, I have a new dr.and haven tbeen sleeping well so I took some Sominex again. I have a monthly routine urine screen coming up on the 8th. Do I need to mention this to the Dr BEFORE I do the screen. I m afraid I will sound suspicious and like I m making up an excuse in case I test positive for methadone. I know that a confirmation test would once again, clear up the matter and would be negative but I don t want the trust to be compromised during that waiting period and I don t even know if my new dr.does confirmation testing or if he would fire me on the spot for a failed screen. I take great care to make sure I do everything as prescribed and I don t even want to take the chance of my new dr questioning my honesty. The best thing would just be to have the confidence that no DiphenhydramineIis in my system when I take the urine screen. How long before the screen should I stop taking it to make sure there Iis no question. In other words, how long will it remain in my system

Hi

Many drugs including antihistamines, analgesics and cough suppressants can cause false positive results while testing for drugs. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine which has shown false positive result for methadone in many patients.Once you have consumed the drug,it takes 6 to 12 hours for the drug levels to peak in your body. After 2 to 3 days, the drug will be completely eliminated or flushed out from your body.Hence I would recommend stopping diphenhydramine 72 hours prior to the day of drug testing to avoid false positive results.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
