How Long Before This Heartburn Stops?

I quit taking Nexium a couple weeks ago. I am suffering more heartburn than before I started taking it. Last night pain in center of chest, belching and felt real bad. I could not sleep. Feels like my stomach is sore on the inside. I started taking the Alkaseltzer Chews and they help some. Also using 1/2 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar in some water. How long before this heartburn stops?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Heartburn and belching are due to GERD disease. This is a condition where the acids go up from the stomach to the throat beause the valve that should prevent them from going up is not working well.

To reduce acid reflux in GERD, patients should:
- loos weight if overweight
- keep the bed head raised
- not eat the last 4 hours before bedtime, should only sip water
- no use of alcohol; no smoking; no energy drinks; no coffee after 3 pm

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
