How Early Can An STD Be Detected After Unprotected Intercourse?

Hello I’ve recently had unprotected with someone and unsure if I caught anything. Now I don’t know if the other person has anything but it is my first time having unprotected sex. I got tested about 7 hours later but feel like the test wouldn’t be able to catch any viruse I could’ve caught in such short notice. Please I’m over here going crazy.

Hi,

Ideally, you should go for protected intercourse especially with unknown partners. Post-exposure you should get tested for STI. You get reliable test results if you are infected with syphilis in about a week or 3 months, in 2 weeks for chlamydia and gonorrhea, hepatitis C, D or HIV in 6 weeks to 3 months. Individual differences are there as everything depends upon the severity of infection and your immune system.

Do not indulge in high risk (multiple partners, men having sex with men, sex worker, IV drug user and anonymous partners). No worries consult a PCP at the earliest, you may require PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) with ART (antiretroviral medicines). Get regularly checked and treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
