Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to damage to any internal structures of knee like meniscus or ligaments. It can be ruled out by having a physical examination with orthopedician and confirmed by doing MRI of knee. If it is mild injury then conservative therapy with NSAIDs muscle strengthening exercises like quadriceps strengthening exercises and physiotherapy will be helpful. But if it is a severe injury or mild to moderate injury with no improvement after conservative therapy then surgical option can be considered. Usually a diagnostic arthroscopy and correction through that is done. Hope this may help you. Let me know if you have any further queries.
