How Can Water Retention In Ankles, Feet And Calves Be Prevented?

I have been retaining water in ankles and feet and calves. It began a couple of months ago after seeing a pulmonologist for shortness of breath whereas he prescribed prednisone. I have also been seeing a cardiologist for same and got a clean bill of health from him. I am 72 yrs. old and 25lbs overweight. get no exercise due to hip pain from both.

Swelling in the feet or pedal edema could be a cardiac or renal(kidney) problem. Other than that if your cardiologist has evaluated you and found no cardiac issue, i would suggest you to get a hemogram to look for anemia and a renal function test done which would include serum creatinine estimation.
Also get a urine exam to look for protein loss in the urine which could be another cause of the swelling.
As a first step cut down on your salt intake and ask your pulmonologist if the dose of prednisone can be reduced.
