Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Doctor, My baby boy is 18 months old.3 days back he was suffering from tonsilitis, by the medicines (Meftal P) his fever got subsided, but he is having terrible cough. My doc suggested tuspel plus, still no releif from cold. Baby is not eating as well. I have given only 1 dose (3ml)of Tuspel plus as of now. Please suggest should i give the same cough syrup for some more time or change to a different cough syrup
Cough syrups are not routinely recommended in children especially under 2 years of age. This is because they are not found to be effective and have high risk for side effects in children under 2 years of age. If the child is active and playful then the cough is due to the original infection he had and it may take up to 2 weeks to go away and sometimes 3 weeks. This is because the mucosa continue to produce secretions even after the virus is gone. To help make sure you do nasal lavage with saline solution 2-3 times a day to clear his nose secretions and also give him plenty to drink. If no improvement in a few days or any worsening please see your doctor to rule out pneumonia as the cause of the cough.
I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
