Hi,

Your explanation of having a rusty discharge and then thick yellow discharge are pointing towards sinus infection or sinusitis only. Rusty discharge can be due to old blood from the sinuses due to inflammation.

Home remedies cannot provide complete relief and at times the infection can worsen in the absence of appropriate antibiotics. So my suggestion is to consult an otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a sinus X-ray can be done for confirmation. You can be advised a course of antibiotics like Augmentin and anti-inflammatory painkillers like Advil. Along with it take decongestants like Xylometazoline nasal sprays and make steam inhalations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
