How Can Severe Gout Be Treated?

I am a 62 yo male with family history of Gout. I ve had a few (5) attacks over the last 18 months (mild to severe) but NONE prior to that. I m very active athletically [a marathon every month plus other activities], so I m in pretty good health. I have an appointment scheduled with my GP (next week)....prior to going to a specialist. Is there a good generic list of foods that should be avoided or minimized and any other general info or recommendations?? As a stop-gap for pain & to minimize the condition, I ve taken a few Prednisone tablets in the past. This seems to help but I realize is only a band aid no permanent solution.
