How Can Severe Bad Breath Be Treated?

I developed severe bad breath, unrelated to dental issues. My dentist insisted that it was because I was getting older, & told me it was not my teeth or gums, no infection or decay. Another doctor told me it was due to diabetes & the last doctor I talked to said it was my diet. All dismissed the symptoms & I can t get anyone to get to the root of the problem. How do I find out what is wrong if no one will take me seriously when I complain about this. I told one doctor that it was driving me crazy & he laughed at me. I ve had this for some time & it s just getting worse. Can you help?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I totally understand the frustration due to this issue. And you are totally right, your case should be evaluated more seriously.

The following points should be taken into consideration:

1- Do you have difficulty swallowing especially fluids? Do you have any pain when you swallow? Does sometimes food particles come out into your mouth undigested? If any of these symptoms is present then you should be evaluated for your esophagus, a problem called zenker diverticulum can be the reason of such thing and it is more common when you become older.

2- Do you have reflux? Acid reflux from the stomach can cause such symptoms and treatment with PPIs is enough to make this situation better.

3- Do you smoke? Do you drink a lot of alcohol? If so, it is recommended to stop them not only because they cause bad breath but also because they can affect your health too.

4- Sometimes, the presence of worms in your guts can lead to a bad breath. I recommned you to do a stool culture and analysis to look for parasites and ova and to do a CBC (Complete Blood Count) to look for increased eosinophils. If anyone of these tests is positive then you should be treated, for example, take vermox once and then repeat it another time in 2 weeks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ali Mourad

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As you have taken opinion from various eminent specialist, thus my approach in your case will be to exclude factors like alcoholism, diabetes, any dental condition [ the second opinion is welcome], nutritional: such as vitamin C and K deficiency, use of medications [pain killers, blood thinners], till then:

.avoid hard and fast brushing.
. hard diets and snacks which can cause injury such as chips, sour foods or drinks, hot drinks, carbonated acid drinks, sticky chocolates, pain-killers, blood thinners;
. rinse mouth with mouth fresheners often.
. Avoid: tobacco chewing, betel nut chewing, and smoking
. Take care of plaque deposits by proper cleaning and visiting dentist regularly.
. Use soft bristle toothbrushes to brush gently and use vitamin supplements in case of deficiency.
.Use well-balanced nutritious diet, proper mastication, and brush away the food particles in the mouth after every meal.
. Oral hygiene and dental health is very important as well.
. Try to gargle with salty warm water after every meal.

.use khadiradi vati as lozenges
.at bed time keep mustadi vati in mouth

PS. Halitosis [bad breath] is typically caused by poor dental hygiene. However, other factors like heavy metal build up, infections of the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the gastrointestinal tract, and some diseases involving the kidneys and the liver can also cause bad breath. Dieting, alcohol abuse or fasting can also produce bad breath.
