How Can Pruritus Along With COPD And Shoulder Ache Be Treated?
My 86 year old wife has elderly pruritus ! the itching has been treated with .25 Hydroxyzine, 3 times daily. does not seem as effective now after about 1 year. She also has COPD and an extremely worn out shoulder joint, Is there anything other than Hydroxyzine? Benadryl has not had any effect. We have been to an Allergist who has stated a recent conference he attended in Los Angeles indicated this is a nationwide problem in the elderly that no one has found a remedy

Your wife could try using calamine lotion. It's harmless and has a soothing effect. Along with this, she could try switching to Levocetirizine for itching. It is from a different class of antiallergens and may be helpful. For the shoulder ache, she could maybe switch from Diclofenac to Aceclofenac after consulting her regular physician. She will also need to take an antacid like Pantoprazole, as the painkiller will predispose her gastritis.
Additionally, cold and warm compress for the shoulder and gentle shoulder mobilization physiotherapy could do the trick. You can look up these exercises on youtube. They are gentle exercises that can be done sitting down and with practically no equipment.
