How Can Pregnancy Be Confirmed?

I have had a mixture of positive and negative pregnancy tests over the past week. My first positive was a week ago. My last few were negative but turned positive after the 10 minute window. Surely my hcg levels should be strong enough after 1 week to pick up a positive if I was pregnant.

Hello.. I can understand your anxiety in doing pregnancy test repeatedly.
Beta HCG are produced during pregnancy and excreted in urine. These are detected only after 7 days of missed period. Once you get positive test, from there onwards every time it will be positive because beta HCG levels will be maintained through the pregnancy.

In your case, you got negative test which means HCG was absent in your urine. As you said the test is turning positive after 10 minutes (false positive). This could happen if blood or protein was present in urine at that time or if you were using any anticonvulsant drugs.

Blood or protein in urine can occur in different renal diseases. So first it is better that you go for a renal function test (urea, creatinine, electrolytes) and abdominal ultrasonography. If there is any problem in investigations, you can contact us at any time.

Coming to confirmation of pregnancy, if we have any doubt in urine tests, we can go for a blood test. Quantitative estimation of a beta HCG levels in blood gives us a better confirmation of pregnancy. So understand all the aspects and act accordingly. Hope everything goes well as per your wish.
