How Can Persistent Cough Be Treated?

I have had a persistent cough on and off for several years! I ve had chest x-rays, sinus CT scans, and recently had a large benign tumor removed from my thyroid along with the right side of the thyroid. I was hoping the removal would take care of the cough, but a week after surgery I got the flu and now I m still coughing. I ve been doing an Albuterol inhaler religiously along with taking Benzonatate three times a day and Delsum cough medicine every 12 hours - nothing seems to help. I m at my wit s end and ready to find an accupuncturist or hypnotist because I m wondering if my throat muscles are just so used to coughing that they just can t stop! Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your history, as you already consulted with doctor, kindly do CT chest, sputum culture, complete blood count after consultation. It may due to allergy. You can take tab. Montelucast and tab. levocetrizine. You may require antihistaminic after consultation. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Shyam B. Kale
