How Can Lymphocytic Colitis Be Treated?

I have Systemic E. Lupus but it is in remission. I take no medication for it. I was just diagnosed with Lymphocytic Colitis. The GI doctor wants to put me on Budesonide but I hate steroids. I don t really even have regular diarrhea, just every other week or so. Otherwise BMs are just loose. I think I should check with my rheumatologist to see what he thinks. I read L Colitis can t be cured so if we re just treating symptoms couldn t diet & something less drastic be better?

Hi,

I can understand your concern regarding Lymphatic colitis. Lymphocytic colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by chronic non-bloody watery diarrhea.

Treatment of lymphocytic colitis varies depending on the symptoms and severity of the cases. Lifestyle changes aimed at improving diarrhea are usually tried first. Recommended changes include reducing the amount of fat in the diet, eliminating foods that contain caffeine or lactose, and not using NSAIDs.

If lifestyle changes alone are not enough, medications are often used to control the symptoms of collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis.
1. Antidiarrheal medications such as Bismuth Subsalicylate and bulking agents reduce diarrhea.
2. Anti-inflammatory medications, such as Mesalamine, Sulfasalazine, and steroids including Budesonide, reduce inflammation.

For very extreme cases of collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis, bypass of the colon or surgery to remove all or part of the colon has been done in a few patients. This is rarely recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
