I suffer from collagenous colitis. I have had watery diarrhea about 1/2 hour after I eat anything. This has been going on for the last 2 weeks straight. I have taken loperamide daily and it's not working. Today I am very weak and dizzy. My heart is racing and I just feel terrible. Should I go to the hospital? I have doctors' appointments next week.

doctor1 MD

Hello, Thanks for the query to H.C.M,C.
For long use loperamide is a dangerous drug , so please stop at once.
If you have loose motion after you eat anything, take ( drink ) hot water as you can sip like tea 1 hour before each meal. This will not treat your diarrhoea but frequency of this will...

Use of Secnidazole

Hello,
I am a male 48 years old 6'2" 198 lbs. Recently I was on a mission trip in Guatemala with a group. Since the return most of the group has come back with on-going diarrhea. My wife did as well and she went to her doctor and they prescribed Flagyl for a week. It worked. I developed symptoms a couple of weeks after my wife but since I also have Collagenous Colitis, I wasn't sure of the cause of my diarrhea, as it could be a colitis flare up. I currently take pepto daily for the colitis and Endocort on occasion as needed.

I went to a doctor and explained all this to her and she gave me Flagyl for a week as well. I have been off of it for two weeks and I still have diarrhea in varying degrees. A friend who went to Guatemala with me said the doctor there prescribes Secnidazole (2g) - 1 dose for giardiasis. Is it okay for me to take? I also take Lisinopirl (10mg) for mild hyper tension, 81mg aspirin, probiotics, Allopurinol (300mg) to reduce uric acid to prevent Gout.

A year ago I had a colonoscopy and it reaveled that I am suferring from collagenous colitis. I was treated with budesonide for three months and I recovered. At that time the doctor told me that I might have episodes in the future and told me to take budesonide for three months. 1st. month 9 mg - 2nd. month 6 mg- 3rd month 3 mg then stop.
My problem now is that since three months I got eczema and the dermatologist put me on 20mg prednisone.
Now and for 20 days I got watery diarrhea most probably an episode of collagenous colitis ( as I am on Sertraline which is a trigger of collagenous colitis) .
My question is : Shall I stop the prednisone and start the budesonide ? My watery diarrhea is really severe and I am losing weight.
The other question is : I want to stop the prednisone and start to treat the collagenous colitis so shall I stop the prednisone. Thanks for your prompt answer as the diarrhea is making me very weak.

I just want to add that I will switch from Sertraline to Efexor

Hello. My name is xxxxx. I have had IBS for several years. About three years ago, GI specialist took a biopsy after I had had several weeks of watery diarrhea and extreme weight loss and diagnosed Collagenous Colitis.
I have just recently had similar symptoms with 10 weeks of watery diarrhea an weight loss with a persistent pain in the lower right abdomen. I have had no appetite and when I do eat, After an hour or so, I have to have a bowel movement, always watery or very loose. It comes with extreme cramping and pain. My GI has prescribed Bentyl and Neuronton. They help but do not ease the pain. I have lost 25 lbs in the last 6 weeks. My Doc still believes it is IBS. How come so little is known about Collagenous Colitis? I am confused and not really sure what I really have and what I should treated for. Can you help? Thanks.

Begining of 2015 I had severe watery diarrhea for about 2 months. I had a colonoscopy done and was diagnosed with collagenous colitis. I was put on Budesonide for 3 months and I recovered. But the doctor told me that in the future I might have episodes of collagenous colitis and described me a course of 3 months Budesonide in case I get it again.
7 months ago I started suferring from eczema and given creams and antihestamines which did not help. Then the doctor put me on 10 mg Prednisone then reduced to 5 mg daily which I am taking until today.
1 month ago I started having watery diarrhea again ( about 8 times bowel movements daily). I think it is an episode of collagenous colitis. (I am on 200 mg Sertraline (Zoloft) which I read that it can cause collagenous colitis and I will switch to another antidepressant.
Now I will start taking the Budenoside for 3 months because of the severe watery diarrhea as the doctor told me in 2015.
I think that I have to stop taking the 5mg Prednisone.
My question is : am I right to start the Budesonide and stop the Predisone as both are steroids. And would the Budesonide help the eczema.
I am losing weight as anything I eat causes me a bowel movement.

Hello...are the blood tests for allergies more effective than skin/scratch testing? I am 56 year old female with collagenous colitis and recently developed allergy type symptoms to many foods, cats and the sun. After about thirty minutes of exposure, a red raised and itchy rash develops on all skin surfaces exposed to the sun. I had blood testing for allergies that my FP doc told me "would check for everything" and the results showed an allergy to a tropical grass.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Blood test for allergies is superior to skin tests

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mrs. Jahala,

I have had chronic collagenous colitis for 2-1/2 years with little relief. What can I do to help myself? After being diagnosed with it, I was put on Endocort with very little change. Had to stop after a couple months of use. Then tried it later on a second & third time with NO relief whatsoever. Am now taking nothing for it besides Immodium and Lomotil. It remains chronic having Bork movements 20-30 times per day, EVERY DAY. 6 months after the onset of the diarrhea, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Between the two, I m really struggling. Any suggestions?
