How Can Low Haemoglobin Level And Headache Be Treated?

Hi I received a text from my doctor telling me that my Haemoglobin is Low. I asked how low it is. She said 82...does that mean 8.2 or 82 I m not sure how to understand these blood count levels. I had my period for almost 3 weeks since 4th June, still slightly bleeding, but it s slowing down, I am also suffering with a real bad headache so painful and lightheaded....should I go to the hospital or wait until I can see my doctor? I had the same problem with bleeding on April 9th and it didn t finish until the 4th May. Blood test came back normal with no sign of Low Haemoglobin, I got sent home from hospital late that night I was admitted to the hospital. Now that my blood test show I have Low Haemoglobin what can I do? Go to the Hospital or wait?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Based on the history given you seem to be suffering from anemia apparently due to prolonged menstrual bleeding.

It occurs when you do not have enough red blood cells or when your red blood cells do not function properly. It is diagnosed when a blood test shows a hemoglobin value of less than 13.5 gm/dl in a man or less than 12.0 gm/dl in a woman.

Your hemoglobin value is 8.2 gm/deciliter which is suggestive of severe anemia. I would advise you to go the hospital immediately for further clinical evaluation and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
